Wimco Seedlings, inherited forestry operations from Wimco Ltd. which till recently was a subsidiary of Swedish Match, later merged with Wimco Ltd. and ITC Ltd. and now operating as a unit of ITC - PSPD business. The unit was the first to start forestry operations outside government sector in India and has an experience of working with farmers for the last over four decades.
Forestry initiatives in Wimco date back to 1960's and 70's when the company started introducing poplar clones from different countries for their trial in India. Among its introductions, two clones viz., G48 and G3 introduced in 1968 laid down the foundation for the large scale poplar culture in northwestern states. The company started raising poplar ETPs (Entire Trans Plants) and their supply to the farming community in 1975-76. The company later on created Agroforestry Extension Division in 1976 and a subsidiary company-Wimco Seedlings Ltd. in 1984 for focused R&D and extension on forest tree species. The company also promoted kadam plantations in Northeastern states between 1990-1994 and eucalypts clonal and seedling plantations 1984 onwards. Wimco Seedlings Ltd. was merged with Wimco Ltd. in 2007.
Wimco Seedlings is a trusted partner of tree growers and the acknowledged leader amongst producer of quality planting stock of poplar, eucalypts, kadam and a few other forestry and horticultural tree species. It has been recognized as such by the enlightened & discerning farming community of U.P., Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, the forestry and agricultural establishments and research institutes in India. It introduced poplar to the farming community of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttrakhand states around 4 decades ago and since then it is a backbone and at the center stage of poplar culture in the northwestern states. It has been regularly participating in international, national and local level foras related to poplar farming, agroforestry, nursery technologies and related activities.
